- 5/7/2025: Columbia University lays off workers due to slashes in government funding; the government issues another consent decree. Columbia University has laid off 180 staff members after the Trump administration slashed its funding earlier this year. News of the cuts comes just days after an anonymously sourced Wall Street Journal report that Columbia is facing a federal consent decree to force it to make operational changes. (Consent decree: Columbia is in trouble because the government believes it wasn’t following important rules, so a court is making them follow strict rules and fix how they run things, or else they’ll face bigger consequences.)
